Program Review

Alitalia is Italy’s largest airline. The company boasts one of the most modern and efficient fleets in the world with an average age of seven years. Alitalia participates in the biggest trans-Atlantic joint venture with Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines. The quality of its service, the attention to the passenger experience, the high level of professionalism, the consistent training of its crew, service technicians and all its staff have always been the hallmark of Alitalia.

Alitalia MilleMiglia Loyalty Program

Dreams come true with the new MilleMiglia loyalty program coming from Alitalia. Reputable airline companies provide special loyalty programs to the people who fly often. When a client becomes loyal to a certain company, he/she is rewarded in various manners in order to keep him/her enjoying and using that specific company’s services. Similarly to the supermarket chains that offer saving cards, the airline companies’ loyalty programs offer points every time a client uses its services.

Alitalia has taken things further and is now offering rewards that exceed the commonly known flying benefits. With the MilleMiglia program, travelers get to enjoy free or considerably reduced prices for the company’s commercial partners’ services, including hotels, car rentals, and other leisure institutions.

Read below a detailed description of Alitalia’s MilleMiglia loyalty program, including how to register, gain points and spend them.

Registration In The Alitalia Millemiglia Loyalty Program

The MilleMiglia program offers a wide range of privileges and services created especially for the travelers’ comfort. Joining one of the most convenient and beneficial airline loyalty programs is easy. The passengers are invited to access the online registration form on the following link: alitalia.com/....

Every new member will get a welcome bonus of 2,000 miles. The bonus will be automatically credited on the newly formed account.

Passengers aged between 14 and 25 years old will be joining the MilleMiglia Young program. The Young program comes with additional benefits and makes earning miles easier.

Alitalia MilleMiglia program takes care of all the family members. Besides the MilleMiglia standard program, the youngest family members get to enjoy the MilleMiglia Kids programs. The latter helps parents gain more rewards. Children aged 2 to 14 years old will be included in this program.

Types of Alitalia Millemiglia Points

The fidelity program has been created in order to encourage passengers to become loyal to Alitalia and choose this airline over others. One significant fact is that the passengers will get to enjoy once entering the program is the easiness of collecting points. There are more kinds of points than just the regular miles earned by flying, all thanks to the MilleMiglia program commercial partners.

Collecting points begins with registering into the program. The customers will receive a card and PIN code after registering. They should keep that card at hand any time they make a purchase with any of the partner companies in the loyalty program. Presenting the card or dictating the code when completing a purchase will add the corresponding number of points to the client’s account.

Before starting gaining points, it is important to understand the different types of points and their value to the customers.

  • Airline miles

This is the most common concept regarding points. Alitalia offers this type of points in exchange for the loyalty to it. The number of miles credited to the account depends on the kind of flight and class.

  • Fixed-value points

These points can be redeemed for a specific amount of money, equivalent to travel mileage. The general rule is that the clients can redeem fixed value points for airline tickets that could otherwise be bought for money.

  • Flexible points

Also known as transferable, these points can and usually are transferred directly to an airline, hotel, or any other MilleMiglia commercial partner. These points allow the program’s members to use the earned points beyond just flying, but also for other purchases within the partner network.

Earning Miles for the Elite Status.

The MilleMiglia Elite program consists of three levels:

  • Ulisse Club
  • Freccia Alata Club
  • Freccia Alata Plus Club
  • Freccia Alata Plus Per Sempre

Each MilleMiglia Elite program level requires a certain amount of points in order to be awarded:

  • For the Ulisse Club, passengers need to have 20,000 miles or 30 flights.
  • The Freccia Alata Club requires 50,000 miles or 60 flights.
  • The range-topping Freccia Alata Plus Club can be entered for 80,000 miles or 90 flights.
  • Freccia Alata Plus - members who have maintained the Freccia Alata status (before 2008) or Freccia Alata Plus status (after 2008) for ten consecutive years can take part in the promotion by meeting the standard qualifying requirements.

Miles earned using the rollover initiative cannot be used to reach the standard thresholds. Customers must meet the following criteria:

  • From January 1, 2008 until now, customers must have confirmed every year that they met the threshold required to access the Freccia Alata Plus Status (in one calendar year, 80,000 qualifying miles or, from 2010, 90 qualifying flights), therefore maintaining Freccia Alata Plus status for the entire period indicated
  • From January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2007, customers must have confirmed every year that they had met the threshold required to access the Freccia Alata Club, therefore maintaining Freccia Alata status for the entire period indicated

Customers who meet the requirements for participation in the promotion will receive an email or letter from Alitalia confirming their membership to the Freccia Alata Plus Per Sempre Club, followed by a kit with the Freccia Alata Per Sempre Club Card.

Alternative Ways of Getting the Elite Status.

It is possible to match the status earned with a different airline company with Alitalia’s one. There are various promos for status-matching. But sending an email request and attaching the copy of the elite card from another company is usually enough for receiving the MilleMiglia Elite Status.

Another way to get the Elite status is to earn the number of qualifying miles with the SkyTeam and Etihad partner airline.

Alitalia MilleMiglia Elite Statuses.

The MilleMiglia Elite club members feel like special guests with access to exclusive services.

The Elite level comes with various benefits, including upgrades to the Medium-Haul business or economy premium, up to 100% bonus miles, and others. There also fee waivers, like extra bags, priority baggage claim or extra comfort seats booking.

As for other services, the Alitalia MilleMiglia program Elite members enjoy priority boarding, waitlist priority and priority check-in at Business Class counter. The Elite status offers access to Alitalia, SkyTeam, and Etihad Airways lounges, depending on the Elite level. The passengers can rollover the miles or even offer a Freccia Alata Club status to a family member or friend.

List of MilleMiglia Elite level advantages:

  • Ulisse. The clients get to roll over the qualifying number of miles to the following year. They get a miles bonus of 25%, access to extra award seating, two Ottima business class upgrades, priority boarding, priority and additional baggage.
  • Freccia Alata. Includes the advantages included in the Ulisse level, plus four upgrades to Classica Premium economy or Ottima business class, access to Extra Comfort seats. Miles bonus of 50%, priority security screening, and lounge access.
  • Freccia Alata Plus. Includes the advantages of the earlier levels, plus four upgrades to Classica Plus premium economy or Ottima business class or two upgrades in Magnifica business class. Clients get 100% bonus miles and can nominate another member for the Freccia Alata status.

Besides the advantages within the Alitalia network, the Elite members enjoy benefits with partner companies, including SkyTeam, Etihad, AmexMembership, and the SPG program.

Earning Miles That Passengers Can Spend

The primary way of earning miles is to travel with Alitalia and present the MilleMiglia membership card anytime you buy the airline tickets. Depending on how much a passenger flies, he/she will receive more or fewer miles. The number of awarded miles depends on the distance, ticket value, and type of MilleMiglia card.

Alitalia credits miles on the MilleMiglia card for every flight that exceeds 100 miles. A qualifying flight is the one that is recognized as so by the airline. All classes enable passengers to join or gain miles. The miles are calculated in compliance with the IATA TPM – Ticket Pointed Mileage.

Earning Miles Not Just by Flying

Alitalia offers the opportunity to earn miles in several ways, besides flying. The airline company has established a network of over 30 commercial partners. This allows the MilleMiglia members to earn miles in countless ways, including by doing grocery shopping or filling the gas tank.

The important detail to keep in mind is to always have the MilleMiglia membership card or PIN code at hand. Present the code on the card every time you use a service with Alitalia or any of its partners. The number of corresponding miles will be automatically credited onto the card. Here are some partners of Alitalia’s loyalty program:

Co-Branded American Express credit cards.

The North-American passengers have the possibility to gain miles with the co-branded American Express credit card. This is a great alternative of gaining miles for the MilleMiglia loyalty program.

New members get a sign-up bonus of 10,000, or sometimes 15,000 miles. The bonus is credited onto the card after the first purchase. Provided the customer spends a minimum of $20,000 within the first year, an additional 5,000 miles will be credited onto the card.

The airline offers special vouchers for 2 free checked bags annually. The clients also receive a $50 coupon and two lounge passes. There are some downsides to this credit card, comparing to other ways of collecting miles, including fuel surcharges on many flights, no stopovers, and others.

However, comparing to additional advantages that the cardholders get, the downsides are easy to be looked over:

  • Extended warranty.
  • Free FICO score.
  • Car rental loss and damage insurance.
  • Zero liability guarantee.
  • Travel accident insurance.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • First Guard identity theft protection.
  • Customers can use the American Express card in over 130 countries on the planet.

Follow the link to find out more details about the Alitalia American Express card: alitalia.com/....

Another USA-based partner of Alitalia is Starwood Preferred Guest. Just like American Express, Starwood Preferred Guest allows earning and transferring miles to a MilleMiglia card.

Here is the example of the partners' calculation: 2 miles/dollar spent on Alitalia and 1 mile/dollar for other purchases.
